Homemade Hot Cocoa

Making your own hot cocoa mix is extremely easy and only calls for 5 ingredients!

Cooking from scratch is a big part of our homesteading journey, it’s one of our “5 of the Easiest Changes you can make NOW to start an Urban or Suburban Homestead without any Experience“. Along our journey to remove foods that are over processed and prepackaged we added this hot cocoa recipe to our cupboard:

A double batch fills a quart jar almost perfectly. Though you may just have to make a few “testers” to get it to fit. We had already enjoyed a couple of servings from our jar at this point.

Since we don’t yet have a freeze dryer (big $ and space investment – so it’s lower on our wishlist at this time) we have to buy our powdered milk at the market. A box at our store comes with three packets, so our recipe is based on that.

  • 1 packet of nonfat dried milk (approximately 1 and 1/4 cups)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine/ground non-iodized salt (this can be sea salt or pink himalayan salt)

Mix it all together, we have found that whisking works well in this case, and put it in a jar. This is a great task for your children to help with, and provides instant gratification when they get to enjoy a delicious cup of hot cocoa when then they’re done.

It will keep in your cupboard basically forever, but I would try to use it up within six months. It shouldn’t really be a problem considering how delicious it is.

Our favorite way to prepare it is by dissolving 2-3 tablespoons of the cocoa mix into a mug with 3-4 tablespoons of cold milk or cream and then topping it off with boiling water (adjust your powder amounts to your taste). It lessons the cool down time and lets us enjoy our hot cocoa much more quickly. You can adjust the powder amounts to your taste.
